Based on the life of opera singer Maria Callas, Jolie’s latest film was one of the most anticipated releases of 2024. In an intimate conversation with Maria’s director, Pablo Larraín, Jolie reveals how she breathed new life into the legendary soprano — whose influence extends far beyond the echo of her voice. 

Despite initially feeling “intimidated” about exploring the world of opera, Jolie explains that playing Callas shifted her perspective. “I found the opposite: I found [opera] to be so profound in the human experience that it’s for everyone, and I’m grateful to her for wanting to break away from those concepts and bring it back so that it’s not just enjoyed by elites, but that it opens up and connects with everyone.”

On how she brought out the humanity behind the icon, Jolie says: “I think it was something I saw in her[...] a human being doing the best they can to keep their head up and keep going — I find that very moving and I think she was that kind of person. I tend to do that [keep going] and that’s something I recognize in her.”
